The attorney for the shop owners claims that the issue is "about the freedom of individuals and merchants to conduct their business free from spurious claims of trademark infringement." Until recently, the rivalry between the two cities was good-natured, but recent legal actions have wiped out the fun.

Two Santa Cruz, Calif., beachwear shop owners are going to court in an attempt to wipe out the California city of Huntington Beach’s trademark on the nickname “Surf City USA.”
Attorneys for the shop owners filed a lawsuit Thursday in response to Huntington Beach’s demands that they stop selling T-shirts emblazoned with “Surf City USA” in a circular border around “Santa Cruz California.”
