Reverse mergers -- in which a private company merges with a public shell company -- are touted by some lawyers and bankers as a way to gain access to public markets cheaper and faster than a traditional initial public offering. Some say smaller companies in particular can benefit from the IPO alternative. A number of Chinese companies are also exploring going public using reverse mergers. But a Paul Hastings partner calls reverse mergers "the worst idea on the face of the earth."
