The general counsel of insurance giant American International Group Inc. has announced plans to join Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. Ernest T. Patrikis, the chief lawyer at AIG since 1999, will next month become the head of the financial services regulatory practice for Pillsbury in New York.

Patrikis, 62, led AIG’s 460-lawyer in-house legal department during a period of intense regulatory scrutiny. The man who hired Patrikis, longtime AIG Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Maurice “Hank” Greenberg, resigned last year amid allegations by state and federal authorities of accounting fraud and bid-rigging.
