Computer seller Gateway Inc. cut short a patent infringement trial by agreeing to pay an undisclosed sum to an engineer who came up with a fix for a problem with floppy disk controllers. Phillip M. Adams' suit contended that Gateway asked for demonstrations of his programs, then applied the fixes to affected computers, violating both a nondisclosure agreement and Adams' patents. In a separate case, Adams is suing Sony, Dell, Micron Technology and Lenovo, accusing those companies of pirating his solution.
