Buchanan Ingersoll is among the latest firms to increase first-year associate salaries, moving from $115,000 to $125,000. Buchanan CEO Thomas VanKirk says he recognizes that the firm's starting salary isn't at the level of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius or Dechert, which pay first-years $135,000, but says it's important "to make sure that we not only are competitive in our geographic areas but are perceived as being competitive." Buchanan is also looking at how it may increase pay for subsequent associate levels.

Buchanan Ingersoll has become the latest Philadelphia firm to increase first-year associate salaries, moving from $115,000 to $125,000.
The pay hike will affect 2006 associates, and firm Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. VanKirk said that while it could be said the increase is effective immediately, most of the firm’s new associates do not begin until the fall.
