Finding a mentor was the key to negotiating the fast track for Julia Czarniak, a newly minted partner in Skadden Arps' New York office. While Skadden associates usually take nine or 10 years to make partner, Czarniak did it in 7 1/2 years. She credits the help of Harold Moore, a partner in the corporate and project finance group. "You want to be very proactive in shaping your experience," she says. "I just sought people out who did what I thought was of interest to me and tried to get them to work with me."
