A combination of attitude and opportunity helped Patrick Shields make partner 1 1/2 years early. "In your second or third year, you're working with more senior associates and partners with more experience," he says. "You impress partners by acting like a partner ... so to go above and beyond, start thinking like they do: 'If this was my case, what would I do?'" Shields' success in several cases where he had stepped into a leadership role showed Quinn Emanuel that he had the makings of a partner.
