Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to delay proceedings in a civil case against former Qwest Communications executives, saying they need time to continue a criminal investigation into the company's multibillion-dollar accounting scandal. The Justice Department request came less than two weeks after a former Qwest CFO pleaded guilty to insider trading and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. Two former midlevel managers also have agreed to cooperate as part of plea agreements in related criminal cases.

The Justice Department asked for a 150-day delay on Tuesday, noting facts in the civil case are related to pending criminal matters. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Leone said his department is working to complete a review of the SEC evidence.
