All charges were dropped Tuesday against New Paltz, N.Y., Mayor Jason West, who could have faced up to a year in jail for marrying gay couples. West was among the first U.S. public officials to marry same-sex couples, following San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in February 2004. West had been charged with 24 misdemeanor counts of violating the state's domestic relations law. He says he was upholding the gay couples' constitutional rights to equal protection, and thus his oath of office, by letting them wed.
