Heller Ehrman has laid off 20 off-track associates, including contract attorneys and special counsel. Managing partner Robert Hubbell says that for some lawyers there had been the expectation that they would be leaving the firm since they were hired for only a period of time or in connection with a specific client matter. "Having spoken to the associates, some of them completely anticipated and understood this," said Hubbell, "and some of them not."
