Auto accidents allegedly caused by tire-tread separations are generating legal actions across the country, with at least 25 suits pending in four states. The suits allege that tires older than 6 years, even if never used, could cause fatal accidents due to the degradation of a chemical that bonds treads. Much like actions against the tobacco industry, the heart of the litigation against tire makers is manufacturers' knowledge of the alleged risk, says plaintiff's counsel Michael Danko.
