A sharply divided 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a California death sentence Monday, just hours after the Supreme Court summarily reversed the court -- again -- for not deferring to state court rulings. In a 6-5 ruling, an en banc panel overturned a 5-2 death penalty affirmance by the California Supreme Court. The high court, in turn, issued a ruling that reminded the 9th to leave state rulings alone unless they are "objectively unreasonable."
