Any firm may participate in our associates surveys if it has 10 eligible participants firmwide. Firms are given the option of participating in the surveys in print or on the Web. In either case, respondents are guaranteed anonymity through the use of individual passwords and codes. Generally, firms are contacted in April and May about participation in the current year’s survey. The midlevel associates survey is conducted in May and June; the summer associates survey is conducted from late June to early August. Surveys are distributed to associates by their firms’ recruiting coordinators. Requests for inclusion may be directed to [email protected]. To be eligible, midlevels must be third- or fourth-year associates at participating law firms. Eligible summer associates are law students clerking at law firms through the summer; they must have put in at least three weeks at their firms before filling out survey forms. For a firm to be included in the “ National Rankings” chart, we must receive at least 10 completed surveys by our deadline. For an individual office to receive a breakout listing on the “ Results by City” chart, we must receive at least five responses from that office. Surveys received after the deadline are not counted. For the chart “ National Rankings, by Firm Size,” the highest-grossing firms, according to our Am Law 100 and Global 100 rankings, are designated “extra-large,” Am Law Second Hundred firms are classified as “large,” and the remaining firms are deemed “midsize.” Firms’ main office locations and gross revenue are taken from The Am Law 100 and The Am Law Second Hundred in the July and August issues of The American Lawyer and from The Global 100 in the November issue. Firms designated as “national” have no more than 45 percent of their lawyers in any single region of their home country. Firms designated “international” have at least 40 percent of their lawyers working outside their home country. The “Results by City” chart includes results for the nine questions that count toward each firm’s composite score. We use the average of these scoring questions to arrive at a firm’s score. To determine scores for individual questions, we average respondents’ answers on a citywide basis for the “Results by City” chart, and on a firmwide basis for the “National Rankings” charts. Additional questions that do not count toward the composite score are included in the survey to help provide a profile of associates nationwide, to track trends over the years, and to provide insight into any given firm’s score and the differences between their participating offices. This year’s midlevel associates survey report is based on the responses of 3,933 midlevels from 132 firms, and represents a response rate of 37 percent. A report of the 2002 summer associates survey, including firmwide and by-office rankings, will appear in the November issue of L, The American Lawyer‘s magazine for law school students.
