The cutbacks at Florida’s Holland & Knight last week include not only the layoff of 230 employees, but pay cuts for other attorneys and staff members. Managing partner Robert Feagin III said Thursday that “some” positions have been reclassified, resulting in reduced pay for an undisclosed number of employees. The firm, which until May 1 had about 1,275 lawyers and 1,700 nonlawyer staffers, last week let go about 60 partners and associates and about 170 other staffers. The firm has also taken other cost-cutting measures in recent months as a result of an evaluation of its business operations by consultants from Deloitte & Touche and internal committees within the firm, he said. Among the changes he listed: The firm’s annual All-Lawyer meeting for this year was canceled; travel costs were reduced by consolidating vendors; overtime was reduced; major technology expenditures were delayed; and national courier contracts were consolidated. One former partner told the Daily Business Review that some staff salaries were cut by as much as 20 percent. Feagin, in a response to written questions, declined to discuss details.
