In 1996, infant Gary Juliana II had surgery in Gainesville, Fla., for a heart defect. However, the technician operating the heart-lung machine failed to provide enough oxygen to him, resulting in massive brain damage. His parents sued, and after settling with the technician, won $10.83 million from the hospital on Jan. 15, which is believed to be the highest personal injury award in the county's history.
