Ironically, one of the supreme masterworks of music was originally composed to put its audience to sleep. Johann Sebastian Bach's so-called Goldberg Variations is thought to have been a gift to Count Kayserling -- when Bach served as official composer to the Saxon court. Kayserling suffered from bouts of insomnia, and hired one of Bach's pupils to play the piece for him during his restless nights.
