Along with Torys, eight other firms dominate the Canadian legal landscape: Blake, Cassels & Graydon (449 lawyers): Growth areas for this Toronto firm include intellectual property and technology, as well as cross-border insolvency, M&A, and tax. It has Canadian offices in Calgary, Ottawa, and Vancouver, and foreign offices in Beijing and London. In the U.S., it maintains a best-friends relationship with Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg (205 lawyers): Formed in February by the merger of Toronto’s Davies, Ward & Beck and Montreal’s Phillips & Vineberg, this firm’s strengths are corporate finance, M&A, securities, and international tax work. The firm has offices in Beijing and New York, and an affiliate in Paris. Fasken Martineau DuMoulin (518 lawyers): Created by last year’s merger of Toronto’s Fasken Campbell Godfrey, Montreal’s Martineau Walker, and Vancouver’s Russell & DuMoulin, this firm is looking for growth in financial, natural resources, and new economy practices. It has a Canadian office in Quebec City and foreign offices in New York and London. Goodmans (175 lawyers): Known for work on hostile takeovers, financial restructurings, and international trade disputes, and in real estate and entertainment law, this Toronto firm has offices in Vancouver and Hong Kong. Last year it ended a 15-year affiliation with Montreal’s Phillips & Vineberg, which then went on to merge with Davies Ward. McCarthy Tetrault (719 lawyers): Strengths for this Toronto-based firm, the largest in Canada, include corporate finance, securities, and technology practices. The firm has Canadian offices in Calgary, London, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Surrey, and Vancouver, and a foreign office in London. In the U.S. it has an alliance with New York’s Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. Ogilvy Renault (312 lawyers): This Montreal firm touts its securities, tax, labor, intellectual property, and international arbitration and banking practices. It maintains Canadian offices in Ottawa, Quebec City, Vancouver, and Toronto, and a foreign office in London. Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt (330 lawyers): In the past few years this Toronto firm has handled a string of high-profile M&A deals and is best known for its competition and trade, securities, and tax practices. It has Canadian offices in Calgary, Montreal, and Ottawa, and a foreign office in New York. Stikeman Elliott (380 lawyers): This Toronto firm targets large, complex transactions. It maintains Canadian offices in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver, and foriegn offices in London, Hong Kong, Sydney, and New York. It recently closed branches in Budapest, Singapore, and Washington, D.C.
