It’s not exactly beautifully designed, and it’s not exactly full of information, but the Web site launched last month by the Supreme Court at www.supremecourtus.gov is good news. The justices have been slow to take the step into cyberspace, evidently raising security concerns, and as my colleague Tony Mauro has reported, it may have been Justice Clarence Thomas who provided the impetus for the plunge. The site will be more useful for students than for practicing lawyers, who still have recourse to any number of other sites with more up-to-date information on decisions, orders, dockets, and argument dates. And the technique of simply linking to PDF files with the Court’s rules of procedure, biographies of the justices, and the like, is hardly innovative. Still, it’s a one-stop place that has the basics on a key legal institution — and the justices are apparently willing to add more and newer data later if this experiment works out.
