A federal judge in Chicago entered a final judgment of $20 million against the Square D Company and in favor of the late Frank Calabrese after rejecting Square D's request to set aside a $13.2 million jury verdict. The basis of the suit was whether Square D had infringed Calabrese's patent on a data relay system. The jury said Square D "willfully" did so, but lawyers for the company insisted it lost the suit because the judge failed to give the jurors adequate instructions in the complex case.

A Chicago federal judge on Thursday entered a final judgment of $20 million against Palatine, Ill.’s Square D Company and in favor of the late Frank Calabrese after rejecting the company’s request to set aside a $13.2 million jury verdict entered on Jan. 26.
Indeed, U.S. District Court Judge Harry D. Leinenweber added $6.8 million in prejudgment interest to the jury verdict, which came after a long and bitterly-fought trial.
