Two New York law firms’ foreign outposts were at the center of France Telecom’s $37.6 billion purchase of Orange P.L.C. from Vodafone AirTouch P.L.C. The New York and Paris offices of Shearman & Sterling represented France Telecom, and the London office of Sullivan & Cromwell represented Vodafone, along with London’s Linklaters. The Shearman attorneys are partners Alfred Ross Jr. and Douglas R. McFadyen, in New York, and Jacques Epstein, Robert C. Treuhold and Jacques Wantz, in Paris; European counsel Bernard Carrez, in Paris; and associates George A. Casey, George M. Flemma and Henri-Frederic Hibon, in New York, and Bertrand Senechal, Mathieu Remy and Julie de Cazenove. London’s Norton Rose also represented France Telecom, led by attorneys Keith Hyman, Ian Wright and David Lewis. The in-house attorneys are Philippe McAllister, Michel Mauduit and Jean-Philippe Roulet. The Sullivan & Cromwell attorneys are partners George J. Sampas and Kathryn A. Campbell, in London; and associates John M. Pollack, in London, and Jean-Christophe Beaury, in Paris. The Linklaters attorneys are led by partner David Cheyne. The names of the Vodafone in-house attorneys involved were not available at presstime. Orange, the United Kingdom’s third largest mobile phone operator, is a subsidiary of Mannesmann A.G., which was recently acquired by Vodafone.
