As I have often said, the Web provides a great opportunity for government agencies to communicate directly with the public. One agency that is well positioned to do this is the National Transportation Safety Board, which makes headlines mostly in air-crash investigations but also promotes safety in all types of travel. The board just opened a new Web page at www.ntsb.gov/Surface/Highway/ childseat.htm, intended to alert parents to the proper use of child safety seats. Seats save lives but can be tricky to use. The page is a fine idea, but all the helpful videos and other user-friendly material are actually on three sites linked to it that are sponsored by the three major U.S. carmakers. The page itself never escapes from the blandness of the typical government site.
