The number of complaints filed against Illinois attorneys dropped again last year, the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission reports. In 1998, there were 6,048 compared to 6,293 in 1997, the IARDC says, a 4 percent decline. Chicago-based chief counsel James J. Grogan said the most common complaint is not returning clients’ calls, and suggeststhat the decline in complaints may be due in part to attorneys being more attentive to their clients. “One thing we would like to think, at the law school and bar level, is that there’s a lot more education out there for law-office management techniques,” he said. And in Massachusetts, the Board of Bar Overseers reports that the number of complaints lodged in 1999with the BBO against lawyers dropped 6.6 percent from the 1998 fiscal year. The BBO, the disciplining body of the state’s attorneys, cited the creation of a customer assistance program with the decline in formal gripes against lawyers.
