1974: Baron files his first asbestos suit, a $100 million class action in Texas. Class certification is denied.

1979: Baron is one of a half-dozen lawyers specializing in asbestos cases. Fewer than 3,000 suits are on file.

1982: Johns Manville, the country’s largest asbestos manufacturer, files for bankruptcy. Some 17,000 asbestos suits are being litigated.

1993: The Amchem settlement is filed; 90,000 asbestos suits jam the courts. Class counsel at Ness Motley Loadholt Richardson & Poole settle 14,000 cases. Baron objects to the settlement.

1997: After Baron spends $3 million on appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court rules in Amchem Products v. Windsor that mass class actions must be tailored narrowly, with subclasses carefully defined and separately represented.

1999: At Baron’s urging, the Supreme Court in Ortiz v. Fibreboard holds that limited fund rules must not be used to curtail claimants’ rights.
