The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has signed off on the proposed merger of Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. just weeks after an administrative judge recommended it be disapproved.
The merger, which faced stiff opposition from competitors such as AT&T, Sprint and MCI, would make Bell Atlantic one of the largest telecommunications companies in the country.
