Monsignor Willy Romelus, the bishop of Jeremie in southwest Haiti, and Father Jomanas Eustache, a lawyer as well as a priest, came to San Francisco on a mission. The two men came in search of allies in legal education. Romelus and Eustache founded the college of law in Jeremie in 1995. Recently, 26 lawyers graduated in the school’s first class. Attorney Robert Rubin, an immigration specialist, introduced the pair at a recent session at Thelen Reid & Priest. Rubin was among a small legal contingent from the Bay Area that journeyed to Jeremie to explore developing a “sister” relationship between the school and Hastings College of the Law. For Eustache, the school in Haiti is allowing him to change the image of lawyers there. “I don’t know how it is in the U.S., but in Haiti lawyers are regarded as thieves,” he boomed. “As the bishop told our students, ‘You don’t have to be like the others!’”
