Blind Islamic cleric Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman had his life sentence upheld this week. Abdel-Rahman was involved in failed attempts to blow up New York landmarks, which, if carried out, would finally have given native New Yorkers an excuse for never visitin any of their own famous sites. He also planned fruitlessly — to assassinate Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak, but was convicted in connection with the killing of Rabbi Meir Kahane, the founder of the Jewish Defense League. Although no one is accusing the blind man of killing anyone himself, the appellate court upheld his conviction for violating a colonial-era statute prohibiting the “encouragement, inducement, or conspiracy to take violent action,” which meant he could not hide behind First Amendment freedom of speech laws to defend his actions.
