More details about Morrison & Foerster’s mortgage assistance program, which should arouse the interest of all you house-buying hopefuls out there. Starting in September, the firm will offer to lawyers who take out bank loans for 80 percent of the price of new homes a second loan of up to $75,000 to cover a down payment. For a $500,000 property, for example, an attorney could put down as little as 5 percent in cash at the closing. Lawyers must pay back the MoFo loan through payroll deductions over five years. With their high incomes, lawyers typically have no problem qualifying for home mortgages, but often hit a roadblock in meeting the substantial down payments required here. Mortgage assistance is a benefit popular with many West Coast firms.
