Few lawyers accused of embezzling a client's money face criminal sanctions, despite prosecutors' insistence that they consider lawyer theft as serious a crime as taking another person's wallet. "You can steal more with a briefcase than you can with a gun," one attorney mused. How do they get away with it? Sometimes lawyers take the money and run, and sometimes allegations are examined and deemed civil rather than criminal. So, theft cases involving lawyers rarely make it to a DA's office.
