In a split verdict, jurors found Ralph David Abernathy III, who served in the Georgia state Senate from 1992 to 1998, guilty of 18 of the 28 felony counts sought by the state attorney general. Abernathy was convicted of five counts each of theft by taking, making false statements on expense vouchers and violating his oath of office. He also was found guilty of two counts of forgery and one count of influencing a witness.
