MIAMI — The former general counsel for Florida Gulf Coast University has sued the state university in federal court, alleging systemic sexual discrimination and Title IX violations. Wendy Morris alleges in her suit that she was fired on July 25, 2007, after recommending that the Fort Myers university retain an independent Title IX expert to conduct an investigation into violations in the athletics department and alerting the general counsel for the Florida Board of Governors of potential problems. Morris said she was particularly concerned about a letter sent to the university on behalf of four women coaches alleging inequitable employment conditions between male and female coaches. Morris also alleged in her suit that the interim president of the university was utilizing FGCU Foundation funds to shield its hiring of a law firm associated with a Foundation board member from public and press scrutiny. Morris was the founding general counsel of the university, which opened in 2002, and was previously a higher education attorney for the Florida Board of Regents and the University of North Florida. A university spokeswoman declined comment due to pending litigation.
