Sidley Austin has rehired Peter Keisler, former acting U.S. Attorney General and a pending nominee for a federal bench judgeship, to become a partner in the firm’s appellate practice. Keisler, 47, will return to Sidley next week as a global coordinator for the practice group, which has more than 100 attorneys, and will work from the Washington office, the firm said in a statement. After the resignation of Alberto Gonzales last August, Keisler shifted from his post as assistant Attorney General for the civil division to become the acting Attorney General. President Bush tapped former federal Judge Michael Mukasey to fill the post and he won Senate confirmation in November. Keisler left Sidley in 2002 after 13 years at the firm to become principal deputy associate Attorney General in the U.S. Justice Department. He later took the post overseeing the civil division, which has 700 attorneys, and spent most of his time at the Justice Department in that role, the firm said. His nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has been pending before the U.S. Senate for confirmation since June 2006. Keisler started his career at Sidley in 1989 as an associate after graduating from Yale Law School, clerking for both former federal Judge Robert Bork of D.C. Circuit and Chief Justice Anthony Kennedy and serving as associate counsel to former President Ronald Reagan.
