LOS ANGELES — Sanjay Bhandari, who prosecuted the federal bribery case against former U.S. Representative Randy “Duke” Cunningham, has joined Sidley Austin’s Los Angeles office as a partner. Bhandari, who was an assistant U.S. attorney for eight years in the Southern District of California, will focus on white-collar crime, internal investigations and securities enforcement at Sidley. Bhandari was one of three federal prosecutors who obtained a guilty plea from Cunningham, an eight-term Republican Congressman from San Diego. In 2006, Cunningham was sentenced to eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion and to receiving at least $2.4 million in bribes in the form of checks, cash, rugs, yacht club fees and boat repairs, in return for steering work toward certain defense contractors. In addition to the Cunningham case, Bhandari has been involved in various investigations of public companies, city councils and government organizations, including Congress, the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. Many of those cases involved corruption and accounting fraud. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Bhandari was an enforcement attorney, specializing in accounting fraud, with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington.
