SLM Corp., commonly known as Sallie Mae, has announced the appointment of Michael Sheehan as general counsel. Sheehan, who has been with the company since 1992, replaces Robert Lavet, who stepped down last month, three days after the company settled a lawsuit against a buyout group that abandoned a $25.3 billion bid for Sallie Mae. Sheehan has worked as the company’s lead securities lawyer on filings and disclosures. Prior to joining the company, he was an associate at Venable. He received his juris doctor degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Sallie Mae manages nearly $164 billion in education loans.
