The deputy general counsel of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Stephen W. Clark, has been appointed vice president and general counsel of the J. Paul Getty Trust. He will take the post on April 21. At MoMA, where he joined as assistant general counsel in 1994, Clark handled labor and employment matters and questions related to the origins and titles to works of art, copyright, contract and corporate governance issues. He has been deputy general counsel since 2002. The Getty’s previous general counsel, Peter Erichsen, resigned last year following months of corporate governance re-hauling efforts. In 2004, the California Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation into the high salary and lavish spending of the Getty’s former president and chief executive, Barry Munitz. At the same time, the governments of Italy and Greece have been demanding the return of certain antiquities at the Getty’s museum, which includes The Getty Center in Los Angeles and The Getty Villa in Malibu, Calif. Erichsen, who had served as the Getty’s general counsel since 2001, is now a partner at Boston-based Ropes & Gray. Lori Fox, deputy general counsel at the Getty, has been acting general counsel in the interim.
