LOS ANGELES �� A former deputy assistant director at the Federal Trade Commission, Sean P. Gates, has joined Morrison & Foerster’s Los Angeles office as a partner. Gates, who was a litigator at the FTC’s Anticompetitive Practices Division, will join Morrison’s Antitrust and Competition Law group. During his time at the FTC, Gates handled a monopolization case against the former Union Oil Company of California, or Unocal Corp., involving its patents. He also handled a case against RealComp, a real estate multiple listing services firm. Before joining the FTC, Gates was an antitrust litigator at Los Angeles-based Munger, Tolles & Olson from 1999 to 2004. Gates serves on the editorial board of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Law Developments Annual Review and was editor-in-chief of the ABA’s Intellectual Property and Antitrust Handbook. He has served as vice chairman of the Books & Treatises Committee and the Intellectual Property Committee of the ABA’s Section of Antitrust Law.
