CHICAGO Winston & Strawn, the historically Chicago-based firm, is opening a new office in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the addition of six attorneys from Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman who will expand its services in the corporate finance area. The new office, which opens Monday, will team Winston & Strawn with a group of lawyers who already provide legal services related to lending at two of the firm’s major financial clients, Wachovia Corp. and Bank of America Corp., said managing partner Thomas Fitzgerald. Winston & Strawn expects opportunities to attract Charlotte lawyers in the areas of securitization, restructuring, private equity and litigation as well, he said. The expansion gives Winston & Strawn its third outpost on the East Coast in a city that Fitzgerald noted is the second-largest financial market in the U.S. and home to a number of other Fortune 500 companies. Two of the biggest companies in the area are retailer Lowe’s and the utility Duke Energy. The firm also has East Coast offices in New York and Washington. The office will be headed by one of the new partners, Dean A. Warren, and the firm expects to bring two more partners and 10 associates from Kennedy Covington on board soon, Fitzgerald said. The other five partners joining the office now are David L. Batty, W. Kent Walker, James T. Hedrick, Jr., Eric L. Burke and Rene J. LeBlanc-Allman. The Charlotte office is the tenth for Winston & Strawn, which is led from Chicago by chairman and litigator Dan Webb. The firm has about 1,000 attorneys in six U.S. offices and four outside the country, including London and Moscow.
