Patrick Fitzgerald, the self-described overzealous federal prosecutor and former special counsel, is back on the attorney general’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys after a two-year hiatus. Last week, Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed Fitzgerald to a two-year term with the group, which helps shape policies at Main Justice. A former New York prosecutor known for his work on the 1998 embassy bombings trials and for helping to bring down Mafia bosses, Fitzgerald was appointed to serve as U.S. attorney in Chicago on Sept. 1, 2001. He is no stranger to the influential advisory committee, having served there from 2001 through 2005. He was tapped in 2003 by then-Deputy Attorney General James Comey to become the special counsel in the Valerie Plame case. In 2005, then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales let Fitzgerald’s committee appointment lapse. The committee’s advice covers topics that range from terrorism and national security to violent crime, public corruption, and civil rights. “I respect each of these distinguished prosecutors and have come to rely upon the good counsel of the Advisory Committee, drawn from the collective wisdom of all United States attorneys,” Mukasey said in a statement.
