BOSTON – The Archdiocese of Boston is hiring Goodwin Procter partner F. Beirne Lovely Jr. as its first in-house general counsel. Lovely, who is retiring from Goodwin at the end of the year, plans to join the archdiocese in January. The archdiocese was looking for an in-house counsel with a broad-based legal background, said Chancellor James P. McDonough. “Beirne’s distinguished and multifaceted career in private practice provides an exceptional foundation for management of legal matters involving the local Church,” McDonough said. Lovely will take over many of the duties of the Boston-based Rogers Law Firm, which has been the archdiocese’s outside general counsel for 20 years. The Rogers firm will do some legal work during the transition and continue to handle some legal work for Boston-based Catholic hospital system Caritas Christi, according to archdiocese spokesman Terrence Donilon. Wilson D. Rogers Jr. of the Rogers Law Firm did not return a call for comment. Following the transition, Ropes & Gray’s Thomas Hannigan will continue to coordinate legal matters related to sex-abuse cases. The archdiocese paid the Rogers Law Firm $610,020 in 2006 and $448,054 in 2005, according to financial statements. It also paid Ropes & Gray more than $1.4 million in 2006 and $4.2 million in 2005.
