The American Bar Association has created the Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, which will work to eliminate bias and discrimination against persons of different sexual orientations and gender identities in the legal profession. The 13-member group will be chaired by Jeffrey G. Gibson, a partner in San Francisco’s Goldstein, Gellman, Melbostad, Gibson & Harris. Mark D. Agrast, a past member of the ABA Board of Governors and past chairman of the ABA Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, will serve as special advisor to the commission. The ABA recently amended its Goal IX, which was adopted in 1991 and promotes full and equal participation in the legal profession by minorities, women and persons with disabilities, to include persons of differing sexual orientations and gender identities. The new commission will work to implement that amendment. The commission will first meet in Washington, D.C. from Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
