In an effort to help law students find out more about law firms, a student group whose mission includes helping law firms ensure that practicing law does not mean giving up commitment to family and community, has released a report that ranks firms on factors such as percentages of female partners, demographic diversity and numbers of billable hours. The group, Law Students Building a Better Legal Profession, is a national grassroots organization with more than 150 members. Its members work on issues such as ensuring the legal profession is devoted to effective client services and “lawyers as people.” On Wednesday, the group released a series of rankings for large law firms in six major markets —�New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, San Francisco/Bay area and Los Angeles. “Most students think big firms are indistinguishable,” Andrew Bruck, a third-year Stanford Law School student and the group’s co-president, said in a statement. “But they’re not. Our report helps students see the differences between potential employers.” For example, the report ranks Morrison & Foerster first when it comes to the percentage of female partners in New York —�23.3%. The report ranks Fulbright & Jaworski the lowest in this category, with 7.1% of female partners. The report also found that of the 74 New York firms included in the report, 27 do not have any Hispanic partners, 25 do not have any black partners and 21 do not have any Asian-American partners. The report examined a number of areas of diversity —�such as race, ethnicity and sexual orientation —�and gave a grade in the “A” range only to New York’s Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, with New York’s Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison close behind. When it comes to transparency —�meaning how much information firms disclose on surveys — the report praised DLA Piper, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, and Boston’s Goodwin Procter, but said New York’s Shearman & Sterling, New York’s Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and Greenberg Traurig did not provide this information.
