Chicago Loyola University School of Law of Chicago will launch a 3-week international comparative law program in Beijing, China, next June. The students will study the law, history and culture of the country and make field trips to legal institutions as well as historical sites, said Jean Gaspardo, director of the summer programs at Loyola. With the Olympics scheduled to arrive in the city next year, it’s a particularly exciting time to start the program, she said. The program will be based at The Beijing Center on the campus of the Beijing University of International Business and Economics. “We feel it’s very important to understand the Chinese culture in terms of commercial law,” Gaspardo said. “It’s like an elephant in your room, you can’t ignore it.” Brooklyn Law School, DePaul University, University of Georgia, the University of Minnesota are among other schools that already have an American Bar Association certified summer law program in Beijing.
