Massachusetts Appeals Court Associate Justice Gordon L. Doerfer plans to retire at the end of the month to focus on his new role as president-elect of the American Judicature Society and a career as a private mediator and arbitrator. Judge Doerfer’s term as the socitey’s president begins in August 2008, after the organization’s annual meeting. Doerfer has served as the society’s treasurer, an executive committee member and chair of the advisory committee for the society’s Center for Judicial Ethics. Doerfer said he looks forward to more active role in Des Moines, Iowa-based society, which is a nonpartisan organization of judges, lawyers and others focused on improving the nation’s court system. “The American Judicature Society has played a crucial role since it’s founding in 1913 to help improve the justice system in this country,” Doerfer said. “I believe it will continue to do so in the years to come.” The society’s president Judge John R. Tunheim said Doerfer has played an important role in the society, particularly in the area of judicial ethics.
