Townsend and Townsend and Crew is moving from the west of its youth to the east of its future. Later this month the San Francisco-based intellectual property boutique, with about 200 lawyers firmwide, will open an office on K Street Northwest after luring partners from two national firms. Starting this week the office will rent temporary space on Pennsylvania Avenue. Gary Morris, who will be partner-in-charge of the office, joins from Kenyon & Kenyon, where he was a partner in the D.C. office. Coming with Morris are partners John McGroarty and Neil McCarthy. Also joining, from McGuireWoods, is Richard Meyer, who was chairman of McGuireWoods’ patent practice and will serve as Townsend’s head of East Coast litigation. He is bringing partner Jonathan Link, special counsel Andrew Pratt, and associate Andrea Tiglio. “They sought me out to open a new office, and it’s a unique opportunity to be on the ground floor of an IP powerhouse,” says Meyer. “I was very impressed how quickly they were able to put together critical mass in every patent area.” Getting into the D.C. market has proven difficult for many out-of-town firms; time will tell if Townsend takes the successful path of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garret & Dunner or follows in the unfortunate steps of Fish & Neave, which was swallowed by Ropes & Gray in 2004.
