The Defense Department has appointed a veteran military judge to supervise the military commissions of detainees at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba. Susan Crawford, 60, who served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces from 1991 to 2006, was named convening authority for the commissions earlier this month. Crawford will have the power to appoint the soldiers, sailors, and Marines who will serve as jurors; reject the findings and sentences of the commissions; and hire interpreters and other court staff. Before becoming a judge, Crawford served as general counsel of the Army and DOD inspector general. Eugene Fidell, a military law specialist at D.C.-based Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell, says that during her tenure on the military appellate court, Crawford was “a judicial conservative and was never afraid to be the sole dissenter.”
