The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California hasreported collecting nearly $1.6 billion from criminal and civil cases lastyear, which officials said is likely the most received in any year by a U.S.Attorney’s Office. The Los Angeles office, which covers seven counties, collected a record$1.59 billion for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, a jump from the previousyear’s $204 million. The increase is largely due to a $565 million settlementwith Boeing Co. for the aerospace company’s allegedly improper use ofcompetitors’ information and a $519 million settlement with Tenet HealthcareCorp. regarding the hospital chain’s filing of allegedly false claims tofederal health insurance programs. Civil penalties and damages, which reached nearly $1.2 billion last fiscalyear, help compensate government programs that suffered losses. Criminalcollections, which exceeded $413 million, compensate victims for theirlosses and fund federal and state victims’ services.
