Editor’s Note Once again, we present the vanguard of leadership of the New Jersey legal community: 178 newly minted partners who accepted our invitation to be featured in this, the Law Journal‘s seventh annual New Partners Yearbook. As with prior editions, they come from firms of all sizes from all around the state, and all became partners after last year’s book was closed. In the 2005 yearbook, we remarked on how a few large mergers had wreaked minor havoc on the landscape of New Jersey firms, causing a higher percentage of lateral partnerships than in past years: 40 percent, with most of those occurring at out-of-state-based firms. This year, things seem to have settled down. The vast majority of the new partners in the following pages – 72 percent – were promoted from the ranks, having been counsels or associates at their firms for a good number of years. While out-of-state-based firms made more partners proportionately, the promotion trend was just as evident at New Jersey-based firms. This cannot be viewed other than positively. For N.J. law firm leaders suffering the perennial problems of recruitment and retention of talent, the year’s solid record is a testament to the potential for growth from within. And it’s a telling signal to young recruits that tenure at N.J. firms can pay off. While each year we note the continued growth of New Jersey offices of out-of-state firms, once again we see that local demographics still have a hold. Of the 178 new partners, 88 – or 49 percent – listed New Jersey as their place of birth (up slightly from 47 percent last year). And 65 of them – or 36.5 percent – graduated from New Jersey law schools (about the same percentage as last year). A word on diversity. A large majority of the new partners – 71 percent – are male, and although we did not ask for racial or ethnic identities, it is fairly noticeable from these pages that only about 10 of the new partners – 5 percent – are minorities. Whether that indicates a tepid determination of the part of firms to achieve a more integrated partnership – or whether, as is more likely, it simply reflects the demographics of the associate and counsel ranks – will have to be the subject of a more rigorous study than this. What is clear from the information presented is that these individuals possess the talent, training and drive to be leaders at their firms, and we think their achievements are worth noting. - Ronald J.
