McDermott, Will & Emery snagged Arnold & Porter’s IP practice chair Joel Freed last week. The Chicago-based firm, whose profits are higher than Arnold & Porter’s, was looking for another top name to boost its practice since its superstar IP chair Ray Lupo has slowed down his work schedule after a car accident last year. Freed, a top rainmaker, moved to Arnold & Porter from Howrey in 2001 and has built the firm’s IP group to more than 100 lawyers. So far McDermott hasn’t wooed any associates away from Arnold & Porter, but Freed says it’s not inconceivable that a few may trickle out in the coming months. . . . The Washington IP world will also see leadership change at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, where chair Christopher Foley plans to step down in July. During a period when most IP boutiques saw their head counts shrink, Finnegan expanded, opening new offices in Reston, Cambridge, and Taipei. But after two terms, Foley said it was time to pull back from full-time management, because “it’s a good time to transition back to practice.” But with a now 277-attorney firm, Finnegan is splitting the firm’s leadership. Former managing partner Thomas Jenkins will take over as chair and Richard Racine will become managing partner. . . . Meanwhile, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary has lured former Lockheed Martin Corp. general counsel Frank Menaker, 65, who was replaced by James Comey, deputy attorney general until last summer.
