HASTINGS ALUMS TO SIT ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS SACRAMENTO Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has nominated two Hastings College of the Law alumni to serve on the school’s board of directors. Eugene Freeland, 80, was appointed to his first 12-year term in 1993 and now serves as vice chairman of the nine-member board. The Rancho Santa Fe trial lawyer handled personal injury and property cases for the San Diego firm of Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye from 1954 to 1988. Freeland chairs the board’s finance committee and has served as president of the alumni association. Marci Dragun, 46, of Belmont is currently executive director of the Northern California Lincoln Club, an organization that recruits and promotes Republicans for public office. Before she went to the Lincoln Club in 1997, Dragun was a political analyst for the money management firm Fisher Investment and an associate in Redwood City civil law firm Coddington, Hicks & Danforth. Freeland and Dragun are Republicans. Their nominations must still be confirmed by the state Senate. Hastings board members are not paid for their service. Cheryl Miller SKADDEN ADDS TWO TO SEC DIVISION LOS ANGELES — Richard Marmaro and Jack DiCanio will be joining Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom’s white-collar practice starting Jan. 3. Both are coming from the Century City office of Proskauer Rose. Marmaro will serve as the head of Skadden’s West Coast U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement and white-collar defense practice, while DiCanio will be a partner in that group. “They are on everyone’s short list for important complex SEC enforcement or white-collar criminal cases on the West Coast,” said Thomas Nolan, co-chair of Skadden’s West Coast litigation group. “I think their addition will allow us to continue to grow substantially.” Both partners have previously worked in the U.S. attorney’s office for the central district of California: Marmaro as assistant chief of the criminal division and DiCanio as deputy chief of the general crimes section. Marmaro said he’s looking forward to replicating Skadden’s strong national practice in SEC and white-collar defense on the West Coast. “It was a terrific opportunity that in this stage of my career I couldn’t pass up,” he said. When Nolan joined the firm two years ago, he pinpointed SEC enforcement and white-collar work as an area in which the Los Angeles office could complement the national practice. He set a goal of attracting the best talent in that area. “I wanted to be able to give our clients something that mirrors what we have in New York and Washington, D.C.: the ability to have regionally based high-profile lawyers to handle these matters,” Nolan said. The duo’s substantial trial experience is also a valuable commodity, Nolan added. The addition will come in handy in Los Angeles, since both the local SEC office and the U.S. attorney’s office have been bringing more substantial cases in Los Angeles, he said. — Kellie Schmitt
