Title: General Counsel and Executive Vice President – Corporate Development Location: Plano Age: 47 No Growing Pains Every day, Kenneth G. Hawari helps his company get a step closer to eliminating chronic pain. No, he’s not a physician or a lab technician. He’s a lawyer whose job, among other things, is to direct corporate development for Advanced Neuromodulation Systems. “He’s been able to advise and guide in areas where, frankly, nonlawyers really don’t have the lay of the land,” says CEO Christopher G. Chavez. ANS designs, develops, manufactures and markets implants used to manage chronic pain and other disorders of the central nervous system. The company was a longtime client for Hawari, a former partner in Hughes & Luce, before Chavez recruited him. Hawari says he was ready to “spread his wings” from the firm, and even from day-to-day law practice. “I told him [Chavez] I wouldn’t be interested in solely general counsel,” Hawari says. The company’s developers needed a leader, and Hawari fit the bill, bringing with him 17 years of corporate experience, particularly in counseling up-and-comers. “Chris [Chavez] understood that the company had grown to a point where it needed someone to oversee the corporate development, to identify technologies, products, companies that could be additive to ANS’ operation,” Hawari says. Chavez says, when the company’s legal needs grew to such an extent that an in-house lawyer became necessary, he sought out a strong executive with excellent management and administrative skills, as well as just a sharp lawyer. “He is an excellent lawyer generalist. He’s capable of really grasping the big picture, and understanding how different issues impact us from the legal perspective,” Chavez says. During Hawari’s tenure, ANS has almost quadrupled in revenue and tripled its number of employees, leading to increases in the volume of legal work. As director of development, he’s able to work alongside the inventors. “We’re helping them write the patent application. We’re acquiring the patented technology. We’re negotiating the assignment or the licensing agreement. We’re working with our clinical team to assign a clinical study that will validate that technology,” he says. “Ken very carefully and skillfully has integrated the legal perspective into every facet of ANS life and has become an indispensable perspective,” Chavez says. After leaving Hughes & Luce which Hawari thought he would never do he wanted “to learn what it means to run a business.” Chavez agrees Hawari has certainly done that. “We are a much better company and a better-managed company because of Ken,” Chavez says. In October, St. Jude Medical Inc., a leader in cardiac medical device technology, announced a $1.3 billion deal to acquire ANS.
