WilmerHale announced the addition of another big name last week. Benjamin Heineman Jr., the senior vice president for law and public affairs at General Electric Co., will join the firm part time in February as senior counsel while splitting his time at Harvard University. Before joining G.E. in 1987, Heineman had been the managing partner of the D.C. office of the firm then known as Sidley & Austin. Carter Phillips, Sidley’s current D.C. managing partner, says the firm spoke to Heineman about returning. “He was concerned that the firm would have more expectations of him as an alum than if he went to a new firm and started fresh,” Phillips wrote via e-mail. While at G.E., Heineman grew the company’s legal department to more than 1,000 lawyers, making it one of the 20 largest law firms in the world. He’s also been ranked as the highest-paid general counsel in America for the past three years, according to surveys by Corporate Counsel, a Legal Times affiliate. Last year, Heineman’s take-home pay topped $11 million.
